The July ETM Course ran over over the weekend and it was another very successful course. We had a great mix of ACRRM & RACGP GP’s, ED Registrars (adult & paeds), ED Consultants, and even an inpatient Trauma Registrar, and I was really impressed with everyone’s enthusiasm and positive feedback. Thanks also to our excellent instructor faculty, several of whom came from interstate to teach on the course.

One of the (many) highlights of the course was our “ask the experts” session, with Minh Le Cong (from the Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine blog & podcast) streaming live from Cairns via Google Hangout, talking about remote airway and trauma challenges.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP) Quality Improvement and Continuing Professional Development (QI&CPD) Program supports Australian general practitioners (GPs) to maintain and improve their professional knowledge and skills in order to provide the best possible care for patients and their communities.

Following attendance at a course, RACGP members can self record ETM Course as a CPD activity at 2 points per hour.

We’ve just been approved for CPD points with the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand. See the hours/points in the image below. We’ve had a couple of dual ED/ICU trainees on the course so far, and they felt it was definitely worthwhile. We’d also strongly encourage sole ICU trainees, and Intensivists who want a refresher to come along, as we think this course will not only help you understand your role and the ED teams roles when attending ED to assist in a trauma resuscitation, but it will also give you a fresh new approach to trauma management (different to the old single-operator, linear A/B/C/D approach) peppered with cutting edge content.

We look forward to welcoming ICU trainees and Consultants along to ETM.

The inaugural ETM Course was held last weekend in Melbourne, and by all accounts it was a huge success. The participants were a mix of ED Registrars, ED Consultants, some rural GP’s and even a dual ED/ICU trainee who’d just passed his ICU Fellowship exam!  We had people from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and even some from New Zealand!

Here’s what some of the participants had to say about the course:

Despite the instructors having never taught on the course before, the mixture of lectures, small group interactive sessions, procedure workshops and scenarios ran very smoothly, and they must have been doing something right, because everyone who attended passed their assessments on the course! From an educational perspective, this was hugely rewarding and from a clinician’s point of view, I felt really great that we’re going to have a positive impact on the care of the seriously injured patients that our participants treat in the future.

Acting on feedback from our test day, (a great review of which can be found over at the PHARM blog), and some unexpected cost savings, we’ve decided to slash the price of the January ETM course.  The new price for the course is $1999.00 (reduced from $2700.00). The course price includes 3 full days of action packed trauma education, including short, punchy lectures, small group interactive sessions, scenarios and procedure workshops.  You also get our just-released 306-page course manual in iBook format.  (For the anti-Apple amongst you, it also comes in pdf format!)

The manual alone is worth coming for. Compiled over 18 months with input from emergency medicine, trauma, critical care, rural GP, retrieval and radiology experts, with a strong practical focus, it contains digital images, videos and tonnes of links to Free Open Access Medical education (FOAMed) resources, giving you access to the latest, cutting edge trauma information. The iBook format allows you to highlight important sections and add notes directly into the manual. You can then create study flash-cards from your notes!  You can even copy and paste text from the manual into other programs, and you can share content from the manual on Twitter, Facebook, and even via SMS! No other course has this breadth of content, functionality or interactivity in their manual.

No other 3-day intensive course is this cheap.

Thanks to everyone for the steady stream of inquiries about the course.  We have over 40 expressions of interest so far which is almost enough to fill the first 2 courses! If you want to put your name on our list to be notified when the course is officially launched, drop us a line via the contact page.

So where are we up to?

• The course manual is nearing completion. Amit is doing a great job formatting the iBook, and we’ll be sending a few select people demo versions for critique soon.
• We’re scouting locations for the ETM Course HQ.  We’ve checked out a couple of potential venues in the Melbourne CBD, so hopefully we’ll have a place to set up and call home soon.
• I’m writing the instructor course and the ETM Course teaching plans.
• We’re recruiting instructor trainers and instructors. If you have any teaching skills or want to get involved in instructing, drop us a line via the contact page.
• I’ve been testing different online LMS’s (learning management systems) as we’re hoping to get the manual and a precourse test online.
• The podcast is up and running, more episodes coming soon.
• And that’s the easy bits. There’s lots of other logistics, educational stuff, and business stuff going on too!

So when is the course starting?

This is by far the most frequent question we’re getting, and at this stage the honest answer is – sometime before the end of the year. Why can’t we be more specific? Because there’s just too many variables at this stage to commit to a date. We’d also rather delay the start of the course to ensure we deliver a top quality experience than rush and deliver crap.

So stay tuned, suffice to say we’re spending all of our spare time on this project, I’m still working in my little office overlooking the city, and we’re burning the candle at both ends to try and get it up and running as soon as possible, and consuming a lot of Coke and those excellent jellybeans you get from the chemist along the way…
