Further to our recent podcast on Code Browns and Mass Casualty Incidents, we’d like to share the following guidelines released by Public Health England and the NHS in the UK.
Clinical Guidelines for Major Incidents and Mass Casualty Events
These guidelines have been developed for the “occasional trauma team”, meaning ED, Anaesthetic and Surgical services in non-Major Trauma Centres, who may end up receiving seriously injured patients from a mass casualty incident.
The guidelines contain concisely presented information, including infographics, on the specific types of injuries that are commonly seen in mass casualty incidents, based on experience from terror-related attacks in the UK.
This includes but is not limited to injuries due to ballisitic, blast and crush mechanisms, penetrating knife injury, and chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear events (CBRN).
There are separate sections on ED reception and resuscitation, detailed management of injuries to specific body regions, and a range of specialty topics ranging from acoustic trauma, forensics, managing paediatric casualties, bereavement care and rehabilitation to name a few.
It’s worth bookmarking this guide on your phone browser or downloading it to the files app on your phone for a quick and easy reference in case you should find yourself receiving patients from a mass casualty incident.
